Descript vs VEED for creator video editing

A public-data comparison for creators and small businesses choosing an AI-assisted video editing workflow. No hands-on quality testing is claimed. Both tools' metering was re-verified from official pages in September 2026. They fail the buyer in opposite ways: Descript publishes plan prices but no per-action credit rates, while VEED publishes an exact per-second API rate card but no readable plan price at all.

Entry price$16/user/month billed annually, or $24 monthly (Hobbyist); Creator $24/$35, Business $50/$65, verified September 2026Not publishable. VEED's dollar amounts render client-side and none was readable from the official pricing page in September 2026; the web AI Credit selector suggests a plan may have a price range rather than a price. Trackers disagree by 2x on the same tier.
How usage is meteredTwo pools. Media hours (10/30/40 a month) are spent on footage uploaded or recorded, not on export. AI credits (400/800/1,500) cover anything generative. Neither rolls over. Two systems. In-app AI runs on AI Credits, spent per generation at model-dependent rates VEED does not publish; credits expire monthly on monthly billing but annually on annual billing. The API is separate and priced in dollars: Lip Sync 2.0 $0.07/sec at any resolution, Fabric 1.0 $0.08–$0.20/sec, subtitles $0.10–$0.40/min, no minimum.

Buyer cautionNo published per-action credit rates, so an AI budget can only be reconstructed after the fact; top-ups run 1.7x the in-plan credit rate at best and up to 6.3x on media hours, and are barred on HobbyistYou cannot budget an in-app month from public information — neither the plan price nor the per-model credit rates are published. Pick annual billing if you buy: credits expire monthly on monthly plans. On the API, Green Screen and Background Removal bill per 30 frames, so 60fps footage costs twice what 30fps does

Decision shortcut

Shortlist Descript when the workflow starts with a recording or transcript and needs fast editing and repurposing — and size the plan against your raw footage, because that is what the media-hour meter counts. Shortlist VEED when the workflow needs browser-based marketing edits, subtitles, dubbing, and social-video output — or when you are building a pipeline rather than editing by hand, because VEED's API is the one part of either product with exact published dollar rates. Test the same source clip in both before buying. Full metering breakdowns are in the Descript public-data review and the VEED public-data review.
